In 2013 FBS won the contract to supply the laboratory furniture for 8 brand new science labs at Tauheedul Islam Girls High School in Blackburn; one of Britain’s most successful schools. Tauheedul Islam Girls High School (or TIGHS) in East Lancashire is currently at the top of national league tables, achieving astonishing success in terms of academic results, quality of teaching, and the behaviour and prospects of its pupils. UCE Academy, Ellesmere Port

UCE Academy, Ellesmere Port

A design and build project undertaken by Kier Northern to build a brand new 1350 student Academy School in Ellesmere Port Cheshire. Our involvement was in the manufacture and installation of 16 specialist workshops including design technology, food technology, music and art; 8 science laboratories and prep rooms, and various class-rooms, support and staff areas and also bespoke locker units for the school dining area. FBS supplied fitted furniture for a total of 49 rooms. Trespa Athlon was chosen for the majority of the workshop and laboratory benches because of its superb resistance to physical and chemical damage; however it really came into its own for the curved island benches in the science labs with its ability to be shaped to a curved profile with a self finished edge. FBS also supplied and fitted the underslung stainless steel sinks with drainage grooves integrated into the Trespa worktops in the workshops and laboratories. Using our design expertise we designed and made lockable laptop storage /recharging units for the various open plan learning zones. We also made and installed a large number of built in storage cupboards, shelf and drawer units for the food technology areas, staff kitchen and other areas of the school. St John Bosco Arts College, Liverpool

St John Bosco Arts College, Liverpool

St John Bosco Arts College, Croxteth a new state of the art girls school opened in September 2014. It was conceived as a ‘big box scheme which is flexible for both the school and future’. The result is a three storey single span column free environment containing an exciting mix of learning environments and social spaces. At the centre of the building is a learning resource centre with tables and chairs and study booths built into a ‘ribbon’ feature which encloses the area. There is also a terraced performance area on the upper level known as ‘the hill’ which accommodates full year groups so they can hold assemblies, view performances and attend lectures. The design uses a simple, efficient building form allowing for great flexibility to create both transformational and inspirational spaces. We supplied fitted benches and worktops to various rooms. We made over 300 loose and special tables for teaching areas and dining areas including “Wagamama style” refectory benches for the dining area, height adjustable benches for science and food technology labs and numerous fixed and folding tables for teaching rooms and work rooms. The majority of these were made in laminated MDF giving high gloss and bold colours; for the more hard-wearing work surfaces in the art, DT and Science areas Trespa Athlon was used. There were also the more unusual items: the double height room divider of the ribbon wrapping around the learning resource centre in the central space which incorporates storage, tree planters and study booths with upholstered seating; terraced seating for the theatre space and a diamond shaped planter for the an artificial trees...
